bob_belanger 1 Posted August 29, 2007 This is my best ever gull. Please let me know if there's anything that could improve this type of shot. Link to comment

derek_scott 0 Posted August 29, 2007 It is a nice capture, but to improve, I would not place the bird directly in the middle of the image. Remember the rule of thirds. Also if you could I would lay down on my belly ( getting dirty is the price you have to pay) and add some depth to the image. Link to comment
danstan 0 Posted August 29, 2007 I agree, it's a nice shot color and detail, angle and placement could be a tad better. Hard to make much out of a single bird. Link to comment
jcvpictures 0 Posted August 29, 2007 First of all thank you for your kind comment on my bird picture, I left an answer for you there. In your case, the picture is very well executed, may be the bird could be a little more on the left, you know, 'negative space' on the right. It is just my intention to learn with all of my friends and try to help when I can. Some thing I hate is to give an anonymous rating, that is why I leave my ratings with my name, if the person believes that I am not been fair I can explain why I rate the way I rate. Also ratings or comments like yours makes me keep on going; that?s what I like, to receive candid comments and ways to make the image better. Thank you once again, jc ' Link to comment
joe-tury 0 Posted August 31, 2007 I agree with the off center comments. The detail and colour is really good! Go heavy left. The bird is looking viewer right so go with the flow. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 31, 2007 I think everyone pretty much beat the centered frame thing to death. So my two cents ... Along the same lines. I would have liked to see the entire reflection of the gull. Everything else was mentioned. Keep up the good work. Kevin Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted September 1, 2007 I'm not bothered by the center placement of the gull. The rule of thirds is a nice guideline, but it's only a guideline. In art, you've got an incredible amount of creative license, and trying to go all "mathematical" on an right-brain activity often ends up yielding technically accurate, but emotionally flat pictures. It's good to tip your hat to the rule and then do what comes naturally. What saves this shot for me are a couple things. I like the flow of the reflection. I think the symmetry of the wet patch of sand behind the gull roughly mimics in tone and shape the gull's wing. This creates a unity to the shot that I like. Link to comment
