Have never done high-key before so any advice would be a great help.

This is natural light under a tree and not a strobe, guess the

concepts are the same but as I said what do I know.

Oh Hell Yes!

Ger... You know how partial I am to the high key B&W's... This was done really well!... And I mean really, really well!

The blow outs around the head might be going a litle too far, but it's hard to get this effect without doing that... For me, alot of times, I will lower the exposure just a little (to make sure I don't get those blow outs) and then over expose the background in post processing...

One of the best things about B&W photography is that you can use contrast and tonal ranges that you couldn't get away with in colour... I boosted your levels a little, and then colour burned the tree, her hair and shirt. I left the eyes alone as I felt they were perfect.

As Dana had said, you have a really nice dreamy look to this shot, and i didn't want to mess with that, so I left her face alone as well. I just wanted to add depth to the tree and her shirt and hair.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Darren,

Ok, maybe should have spent a bit more post processing in this...I like what you have done with it...I'll fix it up tonight...thanks Man...

I'll be doing more of these. Because I was shooting up at her and the sky was still quite bright it made the prefect background for this shot.

I took it last night, wanted to try a bit more work with my prime lens just because of the sharpness I can get with it.

I might become a high key nut if I can nail the technique because I think they would be really good sellers..highkey children shots that is..

I'm going to get that power pack and some wizards next week so I'll let you know how the pack works out.

Think I only need a tripod and a wide angle lens and I have all the gear I'm going to need for a long time (sure I'll think of something else)

Thanks for the edit again....I can see where I have gone wrong with this one.

I didn't mean to make it look like you had gone wrong... I have just been doing the trail and error on the highkey for a while now, and you and Fred have helped me figure out what works best with them.

I LOVE my prime lens... I don't think I am going to get a Zoom lens... EVER! I will continue to work with the prime because of the optics... I just need to get a good range of them. My next one will be the 85mm f1.8, and then the 135mm.

Highkey works really well with children, as it really shows innocence... One of the reason it works so well with the Glamor shots as well... Good balance of Naughty and pure.

Awesome image Ger. This is the type of thing I wanted to get but couldn't get anyone to pose for me! So... I stuffed the cat under the covers, hehe. Great tones, great pose, love her expression, what an angel. I like the high-key treatment and blank background, no distractions at all, perfect technique.

Thanks Darren and John.

John - thanks for the rating...I was a little bit disappointed with the rating this morning...2 3-3 and not 1 comment as to way..Almost I put out a plea for advice with the image..

Darren, I believe what you picked up on was what was incorrect with my image. I knew the tree was loosing texture and you changed that but also added texture to the jumper and improved the image....They were not decisions I made as a photographer but something I over looked hence the term 'Wrong'....

Thanks again..dying to try more of these..

Ignore the 3/3s, they are just signs of jealousy or stupidity.

I don't see any problem with the tree really, it is slightly out of focus, but the focus is right where I think it should be, on her face. For me, the tree is part of the story but just a prop.

WOW!!!

You didn't give me ANY hint that you were doing THIS!!

arghh

One word ~ Pencil! Oh you could put this in a pencil look and print it and have her color herself. (Sorry I couldn't help that)

SO, anyway ~ THIS HIGH-KEY is probably one of the softest ones I have seen.

You could probablly even go more on her face. I know you probably didn't want to do it because you thought you would take to much out of her face but well you know I'm never afraid to go WAY overboard. HA

Oh, what I could do with this with about 16 hours of work (making her into some little fairy of course)! HA HA HA

BOY! this is gorgeous! Those brown eyes and that tree and that hand peeking out is just priceless.

I am just enthralled at how you did this and NOW you know EVERYONE will want you to do this to their kid. AND of course I know this took some time.

Where did you find the time ;) ~ you did an excellent job with this! Try to go overboard on the facce just for fun without taking out her forehead. Just do it to see if it would make her eyes pop out more. Just for a head shot (a different picture). I would love to see what it does (send it to me).

YEAH! ~ my favorite peek-a-boo. Tied with the girls in the window peeking in (I love spontanious stuff).

~ YEAH!!

Thanks Micki...This took all of about 60 seconds to take...I asked her to go behind the tree and do Peek-a-Boo. I got off about 10-15 frames. I really liked this one because of the placement of the hands.

I'll try what you suggested.

If you want to try a fairy, she'd love it I can send you the high res...(no pressure..)

What I was most happy about is, if the tree wanted there you'd think this is a studio and not a park. And you'd think its strobes and not natural light...Just gets me thinking about lots of different directions that are possible..

Ger, this is fantastic! I love the way she fades into the white background. Great shot, Oliver

theme wise the blow out allowing the fade into the background and the different tones..makes this a winner on the theme...

Ger, firtly I'm sorry I missed this last week!!!!!, I think this is one of the best of the Peak-a-boo imgaes, I love the high key effect and the balanced compositon seeing the hand on the tree makes this image work very well.

Anyway well done Regards Rich.

Was nosing around tonight and found this...I missed it! Sorry about that! Your daughter is becoming quite the little model...she will help you fill a huge folio with shots to entice clients. :) I agree with everyone's thoughts on the high key look...it's very flattery and enchanting with children and your final edit really helped to bring back the tree and some other details. Very nice Post work. Oh, and I love the placement of her hands as well! :)
