root 0 Posted July 27, 2007 I would give it 3/3 if it was set up by the photographer, but this is shot as found and actually has a lot of information in it. Link to comment
dennisdixson 0 Posted July 29, 2007 This does raise questions about people's ability to effectively evaluate photography. I was listening to an editorial the other day on the radio which stated that researchers found that people tend to favor what other people favor, rather than following their own instincts or decision making skills. In other words, people will always look to others in order to determine what is good or appropriate. It appears that most people really do have a herd mentality. A better scheme for rating photos might be to have people fill out a short survey with yes or no answers rather than apply a numeric rating which no one seems to agree on. Of course all these rating games seem doomed to failure for one reason or another. Here is my opinion: This photograph is technically well executed. It is well lighted, in focus and will produce an excellent print for fine art sales. It is also suitable for many types of commercial illustration. No one says that everyone has to like it but no one can say that it is not a good photograph and certainly much better than the average photograph taken by most non professional photographers which I believe are the majority of people rating photos on this site. root 0 Posted July 29, 2007 Your herd mentality comment is interesting. I'm not sure how one measures that objectively, but it would be interesting to have some examples. I may have to do a google search and see what comes up. In most venues, I can't direct how viewers will read this, but in this case, I'm really interested in knowing: a) do they stay with the image long enough to identify more than the stuffed bird and the oars, and b) if they do, do the other details flesh out a story (real or imagined)? Jack McRitchie 150 Posted August 4, 2007 The colors work perfectly here to create a whimsical and charming picture. The comparatively straightforward structure of the bottom 3/4 of the composition works well in contrast to the tangle of ropes and beams in the upper 1/4. Link to comment
root 0 Posted August 4, 2007 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6257316 I uploaded this a second time with a provocative title to generate another kind of discussion and would be interested in knowing what you both think. Link to comment
