I like the juxtaposition of graphics (house), light ray diagonal in the front and the left part you included which add context and depth. On a side note and being late to the party I can truly confirm that a photo that raises passionate discussion like this one can only be a sucessful one...

Hello Jeff. First - thanks for Your comment on my image.

About this photo - I cannot write such long stories as some of our PN fellow photographers. I can only say - the composition in using the light is just awesome ! cheers Jana

oh wow, what an enourmous amount of comments you have attracted here, but hey its one of your very best so no surprise here. It has a lot to offer not only the colours and the light obviously but the shapes and the precious window reflections and the background too which gives it a "bonus" layer.

Hey Jeff and all contributors; just back to say this is hands down one of the best threads I've had the pleasure of following. It's wonderful to get to this level of review and it's folks like you that make it a better place to play.

Jeff, I love the painterly quality of this photograph and I love all the discussion this image has generated. I thought how interesting it would be to sit around a table with you and other members of PN and discuss photography as art. Like you, I'm also a painter . I compose my photographs like I would a painting. I think photography can be an expression of visual fact made personal by PS or darkroom alteration. I also think that photography is a great medium to express personal vision beyond the confines of visual truth. I also think it's fine to mix the two. If no one broke the rules, paintings would still look like they were from the Middle Ages. It's a complicated issue that I will think about some more when I get some sleep. Denise

Very dramatic! Excellently balanced love/fear, hope/misery, however one sees it. Just excellent, Br, Sakke

The family and I are vacationing in Jamaica, so no Photoshop for a few days. I did bring along a camera (big surprise), so I hope to have a few Caribbean shots to post alongside my snow pictures. Thanks for your thoughts.

Adam: I'm late in responding, but thanks for the Hopper comparison.

Elena: Thanks. I liked the grass the most, too.

This one keeps drawing my eye. The sunlight in left foreground and background is magical. The limited but pleasing colors of grays and greens combine with the big rectangle of the house and its shade to create a strong composition that approaches minimalism. The detailing of the house is interesting without being distracting from the overall simplicity of the image. Finally, the boats in the distance sit in sun but active dark clouds roil overhead, suggesting drama and movement taking place just outside this placid composition. A wonderful photograph.

Thanks for delving into ancient history with this one. Given that a year has passed since I posted this one, I think I might handle it a bit differently, perhaps not so saturated. Last summer, I passed by this house a thousand times while on vacation, always impressed with how the light came across the lawn in the morning, so I finally dragged a camera with me and snapped this shot. I think it was successful primarily because of the conversation it started.
