Well, not the river so much as the canyon above it, and the light

above that. Taken about 15 minutes before sunset, after a summer high

desert thunderstorm had passed through.

Hi John, I'm sure the colors were very vibrant after the storm but at least on my screen they are not present in this image. Did you color correct your image?

Also, when posting, the image should speak loudly of your message even without the title. I see a huge cloud with some trees in the foreground but I wouldn't know a storm had just cleared. Maybe a wider angle or different composition would get your feelings of amazement across to the viewer. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure the clearing of the storm was amazing. That is one huge cloud and I think a shot of the cloud with the horizon would give us more perspective. I'm sure you would have if you could have. Thanks for posting, I enjoy a good storm

Thanks, John, for your feedback. As far as the color, there was no correction at all, beyond some basic levels adjustment. In fact, it looks pretty good on my Mac G4 laptop, but I'm thinking maybe I should learn a bit more about RGB profiles. I've noticed that many of my images look much more rich in Photoshop than they do in a web browser. I'm kind of new to the whole digital end of this, so it wouldn't surprise me if I'm missing something basic.

I appreciate your comments regarding the composition. Actually, this cloud was the part of the scene that really interested me, and the tight frame you see here was the only composition I made. As I recall, the landscape itself was flat and fairly uninspiring in this direction. I tend to have trouble viewing this more objectively, though: too many memories wrapped up from actually being there. It's good to hear how it appears to someone who wasn't there and can assess the image without other context.
