Food is a great object to take pictures of, and that cake look moist and tasty!

I'm a chef myself, and I do some photoshoots on my plates.

Here I would have gained the effect of the light. As well would i maybe tried to place it on a neutral plate. For next time you should also powdered with more cacao so it dosn't get juice on top, but nice and soft all the way. The herb I would have keep like it is, and maybe a dessertspoon/ fork in the cake, just like someone is about to eat it, would have given it the final jummy jummy thuch:-)

I love to see more of your foodwork:-)

Thanks for the comments Harald.

What do you mean by gain the light? Sorry, I'm a total newb!

I must say, I used that plate just because it's my favorite. A hand decorated Coalport, gorgeous!

Marcie, In photography we emphasize our subject by having it in sharp focus even if the other parts are softer focus. In this case only the flower is sharp and the cake is soft making a confusion to the eye, also the flower is too large for the piece of cake it is sitting on. As I mentioned in your Samich shot, the beveled edge is not good for food work and this is too close also. The use of your favorite plate would be nice if it wasn't such a strong color against the plain colored cake, it draws the eye. Back up and do what Harald suggests and with a fork or spoon, keep the subject level as if on a table and try the lighting scheme I suggested earlier. Paul
