Guest Guest Posted July 6, 2007 I like the subject Richard... I have to agree with Ger's processing though. Her face seems a bit red... perhaps being picked up by the wall behind her? This is completely different from anything I've seen from you... :) nicely done! Link to comment
richygale 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Thanks Ger I like the work you have done its very effective, this image was not shot specially for the theme but I just felt she looked shattered in it. Rich. Link to comment
rogerleekam 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Her eyes look shattered, Rich. Maybe she's coming to the end of what she's sucking back. I prefer your more colorful version, personal taste, but I can see what Ger is doing. Both are good. Link to comment
torfinn 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Very nice shot, Rich, but I think Ger is into something. Regards, Torfinn. Link to comment
steve lamplugh 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Rich, this is excellent, albeit very sad! Is this a candid shot, or did this person pose for you? The eyes say it all...shattered. Link to comment
richygale 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Steve, no its a candid of my daughter and she was shatterd!!!!! no flash just the store lights. Rich. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted July 6, 2007 seems more dejected to me. Your girl is gonna hate you for this one! hahahaha I also like the new fix if you're fishing for opinions. It's moodier which I think suits the title more. Well heck I would be shattered too if I had to eat my lunch there! hahaha Link to comment
dee 14 0 Posted July 6, 2007 It's a good concept, but I would like to see it with more mood... Ger had a good idea, but I think it could be taken further... If I have time later, I will see if I can work on it to give you an idea of what I'm thinking. Link to comment
kellen1 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Honestly, when I look at this, even after I have read the comments, I don't see what the connection is with the theme but it is a very candid portrait. Link to comment
richygale 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Kellen in the UK shattered means exhausted/tired, To me she looks wiped out she fell asleep in the car about 10 mins after this was taken. Rich. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Okay - thanks for the explanation - well then it's an excellent take on the title! I was kinda thinking like Kellen - and thinking she just looks more dejected or mad. This makes perfect sense now! Language is a confusing thing isn't it! Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted July 6, 2007 tired is about right! I love how she hovers over her drink with the straw. I kind of like the mess on the table showing that it is time to go. I love the softness of the background and the way she has her hands tucked under the table. My favorite thing about this picture is that she is looking at you with her eyes in that almost half shut just like they did when they were around two or three when they were eating and would fall asleep in the middle of eating their pees. Just used to crack me up because they wanted to stay awake but couldn't. This shows you she is still your little girl for just a few more years. THEN GOD HELP YOU!! You will have a teenager and then see my POUT picture ;) ~ he he I love this picture and I think it is wonderful even with little Bart poking it's eyes out from the table. This is really a great "street" picture as they call it. Well done! ~ micki Link to comment
richygale 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Thanks Micki I was thinking I had gone very wrong with this one. Your right about the teenage thing my girls are 10 and 11 so not long, I think I will leave home when they become teenagers!!!!!. You brought back lot of nice memories with your sleep comment I had forgotten about them falling a sleep during meals. Rich. Link to comment
JohnMWright 1 Posted July 6, 2007 Great take on the theme Richard. I can believe she was asleep in 10 minutes, it looks like she was ready to plant her face on the table right there! The shadows from her hair accentuate the tiredness of the eyes. The lowered hands and the angle of her shoulders also say "exhaustion". Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted July 6, 2007 Richard, honestly I almost took a picture of me this week as my daughter has given me a fit! Again see my picture POUT of my daughter. I have been a wreck because I said NO to my daughter and she has been a PILL (as we say here really nasty about me saying no to her) and I have been dark eyed and a wreck. I look just like your daughter in this picture!! HA!!! Link to comment
lbattjes 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Rich, I'm so glad I read the thread...I didn't know that shattered meant exhausted over there so I was lost for a bit. Knowing that, this is very fitting! :) Bet she was just thrilled that you stuck the camera in her face (not!). Oh, and by the way, both of my kids have fallen asleep in their meals before! Must be universal! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted July 7, 2007 Richard, I think you've really got something here. Doesn't particularly convey "shattered" to me (although your cultural explanation of the word helps a lot), but I don't care much about that. I think what you've got is gotten precisely because of the lack of "mood." She's obviously in some kind of big store or shopping mall and to make a place like that "moody" would be false. The beauty of this image lies in its clarity and very fluorescent reality. Her eyes and her surroundings scream ennui to me. Her eyes are engaging yet vacant at the same time and her surroundings are almost painfully mundane. Who among us hasn't known that to be almost the essence of this age group? The way she sips her drink, with no particular purpose, the unflattering light casting its hues and making the white table even more blank and stark, her pretty yet disheveled look. This is what it's like! This photo is not film noir. It is not shadow and mysterious atmosphere. I'd stick with what you've got here. It's not Hollywood. It's the street. And it's real. I think it's excellent. On a side note, Ger, aside from my not thinking this photo needs that kind of treatment (of course, subjective), I'd have to question your execution in this case. There would have to be a lot more subtlety so that the face does not look like it is falsely lit within this totally dark and shadowed environment you've created. Light and shadows have to come from somewhere. Otherwise they just look like they came from photoshop. There are obviously big, bright lights on over the counter. You can't just darken away something like that. Link to comment
owp 0 Posted July 7, 2007 Richard, I agree with Fred. The green hue from the fluorescent lights, the quality of light, and the mood make me think of being shattered in a shopping mall. I seem to feel shattered the minute I walk in. Great capture of the mood. Regards, Oliver Link to comment
sfdgs 0 Posted July 8, 2007 Great thinking to capture this when you did. I didn't think of shattered until I read your definition of the word. It's funny how kids will run themselves to the point of exhaustion and then just fall asleep wherever they can. Nicely done. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted July 8, 2007 my husband looks like this before he even gets into a mall! he looks even worse coming out. Maybe it's that Muzak! Link to comment
richygale 0 Posted July 8, 2007 I hate this shop as you have to walk all the way though it to get out past every thing they sell, which when you just want one thing is a real pain. Link to comment
leannasreflections 0 Posted July 10, 2007 Im glad you explained shattered. I was a little worried about you for a bit. hehe. I really like Gers version. Poor little thing. Take her home and tuck her in. :O)Leanna Link to comment
anthonyd 0 Posted July 10, 2007 "No Dad, I'm not tired..." Can't believe she made it to the car! Original take on the theme and I learned something! Link to comment
