lupine 0 Posted July 6, 2007 Susy: You have some interesting photos in your portfolio and you have some real potential and a good eye. The above photo has some real potential as well. Just a personal note. Have you considered cropping it a little tighter? It seems as though there is a little too much room above and to the left of the little girls. The open space behind them is almost a bit of a distraction for me. The important elements in this photo are the girls, cropping in tighter would bring even more attention to them. In addition, the colors seem a bit washed out, you may want to play with the saturation a bit if you have access to a digital retouching program. Keep in mind, these are just personal preferences, the image shows great promise. I think you have many images at your site that are wonderful. Continued luck shooting. Link to comment
xian_b. 0 Posted July 6, 2007 To me the road is an essential part of this photo. It's what transforms an otherwise straightforward portait into a story. It isn't just "four friends," it's "four friends traveling." That space behind them shows they are not just standing around, but coming from somewhere, going to somewhere. Together. Link to comment
lupine 0 Posted July 7, 2007 Point well taken, Xian. But if that's the case, then make an effort to actually include the road in the picture, don't just have it as though it was an after thought or just bad framing. Let's see the road trail off behind the subjects, let's see the road as it opens itself up to the girls, let's see their feet since they are "walking" on the road. Once more, this is all very subjective. The photo I would have taken is different than the one you would have taken than the one Susy has taken. Just opening up the possibilities... Link to comment

lupine 0 Posted July 11, 2007 It's a good picture, Susy. As we all get to gain experience and become better photographers, our instincts, talents, experience and of course luck, all come together to make all those elements I described above come together so that we can capture the best possible image. I know it's not always possible to get everything in the shot, everything in focus, everything exposed properly but that for me is always the goal. Eventually, it becomes second nature to look through the viewfinder and line everything up without even thinking about it. Don't make excuses for your work! If you have to make excuses, maybe you shouldn't display the work until you feel you can show it without defending it. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to be harsh, you have good work, I just think you can do much better. The secret? Just keep shooting, and shooting, and shooting. Continued success. All the best in all you endeavors. Link to comment
