Hiking Trail: Return from Grayling Lake

jkmccarthy

18-70mm DX zoom lens focal used was 34mm (essentially "normal" focal length lens after 1.5x factor to account for smaller CCD size than 35mm film). Nikon D200 exposure mode was Aperture Priority, with the following manual selections: lens aperture f/8, ISO 200, and exposure compensation -1.0 EV. Camera's multi-pattern metering chose a shutter speed of 1/80th sec (hand held). Other manual camera setup selections were: white balance "Cloudy" (adding warmth to sunlit and shadow areas), color saturation "enhanced", sharpening and tone compensation (contrast) "auto". No flash. Started hike at 6:00am, reached Grayling Lake destination before 7am, and snapped this photo around 7:20am while hiking out (heading east, into the sun).

(13 miles inland from Seward, Alaska). We started this hike at 6:00am, reached Grayling Lake destination before 7am, and I snapped this photo around 7:20am while hiking out (heading east, into the sun). See "Details" for complete exposure information, and thanks in advance for comments and constructive criticism.

This image reflects the atmosphere in the forest quite well.

It's always very tough to shoot in the forest (I tried, and failed almost every time). The contrast is very high. Your only chance are large structured details in light, surrounded by almost dark forest.
