It took me awhile to realize the meaning of your title! :) Great originality and work!

That's a clever effect, I thought maybe it was something to do with blending a different layer but the individual characters have plain colour without gradients. Its a very impressive effect. In this example I might have gone for smaller characters to reveal a little more detail on the face.
