Manual merge of two photos. Camera was held on a tripod as high as possible (tripod held by its feet) to gain height. Shutter tripped by timer.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. I was hoping to upload some more shots of our trip to the English Lake District but a couple of things have stopped me. I have been very busy again but also have had a recurrence of some eye trouble I get from time to time. This makes me a bit wary about spending a lot of time at the computer. Pnina, I appreciate your concern and encouragement.

back in a few weeks I hope!

I couldn't view this marvelous photograph without expressing my admiration for it. I am assuming you were using a rather wide angle lens here to give it that added depth of field and the vignetting. Great shot and excellent stitching of a wonderful subject.

Does this circle display a relationship to the solstice as does that more well known circle, stonehenge? And, what direction are we facing in this view? I am sincerely interested as we here in the western U.S. also have stone circles, some of which may be solstice connected or were used as directional aids to travelers. None, however showing such magnificence, either in size or age, as yours. I too hope your eye problems improve.

Thanks Pnina, thanks Alwxandra. I hope to be posting and commenting again in a few weeks. regards - Colin

Bill, thanks, The 33m diameter stone circle seems to be one of the earliest in UK at about 5000 years old. The stones form a flattened circle and may align with midwinter sunrise though there are many theories. The biggest stones are over 2m high and weigh about 16 tonnes. The two entrance stones are at the northern edge so this is looking south. I find these ancient sites very evocative as they must have taken a huge amount of effort to plan and build and presumably were for some purpose of overwhelming importsnce to the people at the tme.

Wow! The wide angle really gives these stones an impressive air. The muted greens and grey-blue light makes a mysterious scene, perfect complement to the mystery of this circle.

Great shot Colin, it's such a difficult place to do credit to in a photo but I think you nailed it with this one. I'm going to try this next time I'm up that way - maybe I'll take my step ladder :)

Loved the story behind this image. Cheers to your innovation and creativity. These stone circles and rock structures just fascinate me, and I'd like to see as many as possible the next time I am in the UK. I love your composition and the moody sky. Great piece of work. Cheers! Chris

It is wonderfully composed - harmonious (a strong circle in the middle ). Still a lot of enigma radiates from Your image ! cheers Jana

I look at your site, hoping to see a new Colin-Marked-Image. A critique from your side and perhaps something that I can look at that makes me happy to see again.... but no.... Why? I miss your appearances at Photo.Net.

Hope that this will trigger your trigger again?
