" (when in doubt, agreeing with Vince is usually a good option to make you look smart!) " .... Hello Tyler - don't get him started pleaseee (-;

Tyler & Tylor .... I very much appreciate the extra time you both spent here. My preference is for darker too Tyler - thanks for mentioning it. This is the first time in quite awhile I was out and able to 'stretch my legs' with the DigiCam - still relatively new to me having been a film guy for so long - and it's a new lens and I chose the polarizer over the ND Grad initially - anddd my feet hurt - anddd hang on I have a few other excuses .. (-;

I made alot of mistakes and learned alot from this trip -- and from hanging out with guys like you two .. !

Ken,

I've been obtaining much improved results in my own work using a polarizer AND an ND grad. I've firmly planted my a polarizer on all my lenses (removed only in certain instances...a "little birdie" from Hawaii :) recommended that I do this) and stack the ND grad(s) on top of it--this was also the recommendation from the same little birdie, who I'm sure we both agree has one of, if not THE best portfolio on photo.net! Aside from the fact that his suggestions are always very logical and scientifically supported, you can't argue with success so when Vince speaks I listen! One of my first posts since getting this advice, "Sunset Glow," was taken with a polarizer and 3 different ND grad filters (4 stops worth of ND grad filter total) and currently sits on the TRP's first page, so I'm a believer!

I would suggest you try using both if you haven't already (consider this a recommendation from Vince with a "second" from me). Some people say you increase flare, degrade your image, etc. but I have not seen that yet and Vince's images support my claim. The only downside I've seen is it costs you some time because you're going to be prolonging your exposure times but I'm finding that with a good tripod I now click a button, enjoy the sunset for a few minutes, and then have better pictures when I get home.

I'd be interested in hearing any thoughts or experience you have on this topic (or any others for that matter). Once again, great shot here--I like it!

" his suggestions are always very logical and scientifically supported " .... yes Tyler but he's a Redskin fan ... )-;

Thanks for sharing all that - the choice of a polarizer over an ND Grad was strictly $$$ - I could only afford one or the other at the time - so it's definitely on the list. I've never used both but I'll give it a shot (-;

This is very beautiful, Ken. And in my favourite genre. For me, the composition was 99/100th's perfect and I tried a minor alteration before I got to the comments where you mentioned you had more space on the original.

I probably shaved off a bit more than was necessary, but did think it gave the viewer a smoother journey on the homeward leg to the compositional starting point.
