This is a great shot. what I like about it is that you can clearly see other paris landmarks in it. The only thing I could imagine would make it better is if it had been taken early in the morning with less people/traffic in it.

Our urban life operates on a thin veneer behind which there is no social contract and all that we deny about the ages waits for the right moment to pounce.

Or that's what my instant impression was of this wonderful shot was.

This is certainly wonderful, dark and ominous... Just wondering how a little diffused print would be.

Best regards.

I enjoy tremendously the B&W approach to the subject. I also like the way the gargoyle views the eiffel-tower. Perhaps this might benefit from a little cropping, but on the other hand, I have a sense that you like to keep your images "as they were shot". :-) But, back to the B&W-choice... It has a certain touch of H-CB, an touch of the old master. Even the grain support the atmosphere. Well seen and shot capture!

I've seen many shots from this famous spot (though I've never been there myself *shame*) and with similar composition, but this one really stands out by the strong mood it conveys, probably due to the contrasty b&w tones and grainy areas. What happened with the sky on the upper part? It seems to be kind of artificially smooth in contrast with other grainy parts of the sky. All in all, a very appealing and strong photo.

Emre, you are right here is the closing line from it.

"We're told that damned places exist. Buildings where madness permeates the very bricks and mortar. We're told that sometimes dedication and kindness can purge the evil from those walls. This is merely a story. Life isn't really like this, is it? A lesson to be learned in the study halls of the Twilight Zone."

The gargoyle guarding the City of Light! Great shot, Michael, and such a unique composition and perspective of Paris. I love seeing all of your stuff here on PN after seeing so much of your work for the Arizona Republic over the years. I always keep coming back to your portfolio and just browsing. Keep up the great work, my friend. Cheers! Chris

A very effective shot, expertly handled. The grain adds such atmosphere and gives a sense of the soul of Paris.

Wow what a photo! One of my most favorites on this site. I love the Tri-X grains, lovely texture, and great composition!
