I captured a bundle of snow flakes recently, here's a small

collection. The middle one in the top row is what I would call an

embryo flake, it hasn't grown any arms yet. If you look closely at

the flake in the middle of the bottom row, you can see the embryo

flake in the centre. Not suprisingly, I've decided I need an

extension ring for my macro lens! The colours are the refracted light

in the snow flake crystals, with increased saturation in photoshop.

All this, courtesy of the designer of our amazing planet. Thanks for

your comments, Tony

We rarely get to see such photos! So beautiful when we see them individually like this! Hate them when they gather together and cause havoc on the roads! They are like locusts! Very well done and interesting Tony. Thank you for sharing them!

Very cool (pun intended). I particularly like the diffracted light and the colors it produces. Are these six separate shots? I can't imagine pushing individual flakes around on a cold glass plate to get them arranged properly.

Thanks Stephen. The flakes were photographed individually. I put a piece of black plastic in the snow and photographed groups of flakes with the EF series 100mm macro, hand held. The colours are the natural reflections of light in the snow crystals, but I increased the colour saturation in Photoshop. Later I bought the Canon add-on magnifier lens which I hope to use this coming snow season.
