Hi Simon

This is a very successful shot for several reasons:

First, the graphic elements are spectacular and have created an eye-catching composition. The visual elements are texture, lines, color, shape and scale.

The appropriate lighting has brought out the texture to a reasonable degree. I still believe there is more room for the sharpness here. You could use a sharper

lens or could enhance the sharpness in the post process by High Pass filter sharpening or unsharp mask technique. specially since you have lost some details

at the bottom left side due to DoF or lens border MTF ( modulated transfer function -a function describing the resolution of the lens in the center and border of the lens). The LINES in this shot are diagonal all over producing a high degree of dynamism that is very eye-catching. The color scheme is complementary (red Vs. green) having created discordance. The proportion of the red to green is an accurate 50%-50%. The limitation to one primary and one secondary hue has given this shot a powerful appeal that prevents boredom, so that the viewer stands longer with this shot. The SHAPE element here is the contrast between the fast clean optical movement of straight lines and the involving presence of circular motion that the bugs' profiles induce- a very striking contrast indeed. What is equally fascinating is how the shot gives information about scale, so the viewer gets a crystal clear idea of how big these bugs are proportional to the leaves veins.

The water droplets on the bugs have made this shot like nothing I have ever seen. I am not sure how the water droplets are there, but the visual effect is very powerful indeed.

The interconnection of the two bugs has created Gestalt proximity and unity. The bugs position in the frame is very accurate ( golden mean on at the upper left stretched to 1/3 left proportion.) The emphasis on the bugs is through shape, texture, tangent, position, and contrast. They are high in contrast both in shape and tonality value, so they balance a large less contrasty region.

All in all, my vote is that this shot is an exceptional one with all the visual elements working in Gestalt unison to elicit viewer's response.

I thought exactly the same mate, I really couldn't put it into the same terminology but my thoughts are ... "Great Picture" .. Well done Simon P.S. I think the droplets of water are sweat from where one beetle has been chasing the other one.. I will also add that I think the rates people have given to you here are a little tight.. :)
