I like this one, but is there too much empty space?

What bothers me about the image is not the empty space, but seeing the tree on the right cut in half. If you could somehow remove it, then lose a bit of the empty space, I think this would be a better image.

 

The mood and color of the image is very nice.

Deborah, nice shot here. The large empty space does not bother me - I find the mood here to be very nice. I would keep working on the composition here. I agree with the other poster that the cut off tree on the right doesn't feel quite right. Still though - this is a very nice shot.

The negative space works well here, but I agree that when you made the exposure it would have been stronger if you had removed the tree on the right all together. The warm tone works well with the soft contrast, and the large negative space really adds quite a bit of feeling, but the effect is spoiled by the tree on the right. You're on to something strong here, but it needs a little polishing to be the best if can be.
