Cannons, Valley Forge, PA, USA

Ilford Delta 400 Pro. What a mess -- I overexposed it, then left the roll of film in a bright window before developing, hence the dark stripe on the right. These flaws conspired to make this shot look about as old as those cannons, although none are as old as they seem.

This is a faux-antique shot of faux-antique cannons. Please read the

'technical details.' I tried PS'ing out the problems, but the result,

to me at least, was a (more) boring shot.

You might think to put it into a paint form... overexposed goes into a paint really well if you want to print it. I only know this because I take really bad pictures and work with bad pictures all the time in publishing. More light means easier to work with in moving it to creative work. I really like this look personally. It might even like kind of cool if it was ripped on the right side. ~ micki

Very impressive B&W my friend and I am very impressed to see a real patriot in you; I love my country too Dave and I am proud to show it! Best regards my friend

Thanks Lesa, Ivana, Micki, and Catalin. Lesa your choice of words inspires me. I'm waiting for people to notice how bizarre this image is. Micki I just take lots of pictures then monkey with them in various ways until I like the results -- sure is nice not to need a darkroom. You come out with some nice pictures dont be too hard on yourself. also I'd like to hear more about publishing sometime.

Catalin thank you for your very thoughtful comment. The love you have for your country shows in the beautiful and powerful images you produce of what must be a very special place. I hope to visit one day!

After reading your technical notes I realise why I am a fan of your work -- we have similar techniques! In my case it is usually under-exposure and over-development. I like to tell people it's just my artistic style. But I neglect to tell them that said "style" is really just my darkroom ineptitude.

I think the word for this is "serendipity".

I'm flattered by you're statement on similar techniques and I'm a longime fan of yours for the same reason! Probably we share a similar outlook as well. I like life in all its unpredictable and messy artistic glory and detest antiseptic image production.

You however are at least cool enough to have learned how to use a darkroom, I just use the local lab.

Serendipity, plus learning to invest time and effort in trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

Dave, if you can make a pot of coffee you can develop your own B&W negatives. It's that easy. Besides, no matter how much you bungle the effort, you will still do a better job than lab.
