canonman 0 Posted January 26, 2007 The color on this picture is stunning! For an outdoor shot in natural light this is amazing!Sorry I didn?t give a higher mark for originality, but I saw way too many butterflies on flowers. Link to comment

birteragland 1 Posted January 26, 2007 Beautiful shot reminding us of summer, but please remember that 40% of worlds butterflies have dissappeared since 1980, they may not be around for us to photograph in the future,so shots like this are important. Link to comment
therese 0 Posted January 26, 2007 Nice composition, colors, DOF. I just love this little guy/girl! Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 26, 2007 Thanks all. This butterfly is the size of a dime and is one of my all time favorites. He is on a wildflower that looks much like a daisy. I have a very good close up of him in my portfolio, never submitted for critique but it is my favorite shot. Birte, I hear you and share your concern, every year new species are added to the endangered lists, in all categories of wildlife. Link to comment
samcisa 0 Posted January 26, 2007 I think that originality is the way we shoot and process photos. Lighting, composition and technical perfection made it for me very special and original. Link to comment

bgeg 0 Posted January 27, 2007 Mary Fran, FYI, This an American Copper,(Lycoena Phlaeas) and one of my nemesis BFs. I only have one shot in my files. I believe I posted it a while back and it is not nearly as good as yours! Regards, B. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 27, 2007 Thanks Bill, I knew the name over the summer and misplaced it. I had two opportunities to shoot this one this summer, my all time favorite even including what I saw at a butterfly conservatory. See this for a close up-- http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5107315 Cute as a button. :) Link to comment
josylvestre 0 Posted January 27, 2007 Mary Fran, Another beautiful photo ! You know how to represent the nature on photos ! The colors are always like we see it in the nature, not to much saturation, not to much contrast and sharpening.... just enough to re present thing as they are. I think the butterfly photos should not be too much cropped. I like too see the butterfly in his natural habitat. Good work ! Continue tu make butterfly photos. Like Birte said, they will not be with us forever... in the near futur, only few oportunist species will left... This is the american subspecies of Lycaena phlaeas (that occur in Europe) : Lycaena phlaeas americana. The caterpillar eat Rumex sp. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 27, 2007 Thank you Jonathan. I have a few more of this one to work on. I'll share a little conservation I do at home--we leave at least half an acre of field unmowed and whatever plants choose to come up we let them. I discovered many wild flowers and insects there this year. My poor husband almost had his head bit off for weed wacking some milkweed! Poor man had no idea what hit him when I walked in on him yelling and waving my arms. I was leaving it for the monarchs. He knows better now. LOL's Link to comment
