Summer there, Winter here. This image is making "big waves" with the raters, congratulations. It is powerful and so well exposed Neil. You should take up a new career as a Sports Photographer, yours are excellent. I love that translucent green color in the water.

Thank you very much for the compliment. I spent the past two very sunny days at the Roxy Pro photographing the womens' open event. I think surf shots of the women come up better than the men. Women add different but appealing elements of grace and poise. I really am very lucky to live so close to such events. It's only ten minutes drive to any of the surf beaches from where I live. Not only are you and I in opposite seasons, but we are also in opposite landscapes; you're in the bush and I'm at the beach. Thanks again Susan. Kind regards, Neil

Where did you learn to speak Spanish Neil? I've noticed you always answer Julio in his native language, my son is bilingual and someday learning to speak Spanish is on my "things I want to do in my lifetime" list. Being able to attend the sports you do is like being on a joyful vacation year around.

Susan, you caught me out. I'd like to be able to say I can speak Spanish, but I can't. I use the Alta Vista Babel Fish translator. I got a Peruvian friend of mine to check two or three of the translations and he said they were OK, so I've stuck with it. All the best, Neil

Neil - you've been surfing!! I love this shot & had to check your "details" right away. I'm curious with the setup you used how much, if any, cropping was necessary, and whether you felt satisfied with the length you had shooting these. Another dynamic and beautiful shot - congratulations!

Thanks very much Terri. I cropped very little on this one, from 3504x 2336 pixels to 2951x2269 pixels. She was fairly close in on the shore break when I got this shot. The 400mm with 1.4 extender gave an effective focal length of 560mm on my 1D MKII. Not really enough to capture the good manouvres in the early part of the rides where the wave faces were bigger. I needed to crop these a lot and lost image quality. The three shots that I posted were taken closer in on the shore break.

 

By the way, I saw Bethany Hamilton, the one armed girl from your home state, Hawaii. She is a sensational surfer and is holding her own in the competition so far. Coincidentally, an 18 foot white pointer has been sighted a number of times around the Island and swimmers have been warned out of the water on the main beach just down from my house.
