If you don't mind, I would love some comparisons to the shot in the same folder "Fire on the Horizon." They are the same file but just processed differently in that the first one is auto white balancing and this one is "fluorescent" white balanced. I do like how the boats are snow white in this shot and think the lower half is very pleasant but I think I prefer the more prominent sunset colors of the horizon, sky, and clouds of the auto white balanced version. You can see the other version of the shot here:

Tyler,

This is a great photo you have here, the colors are very nice, The artificial light on the dock adds superb balance to the exposure. You picked perfect prime light for this and it certainly paid off for you here, realy love this one! I suggest a crop of the top, but it is excellent either way. Here is the crop I like but I may be wrong...what do you think?

Tom--Something David Clapp had suggested to me is using a wide angle lens to pack the foreground with interest and put the subjects right up in the viewer's face. Since I have not yet acquired a wide angle lens, I haven't been able to accomplish this goal. However, I think that is the pleasing part about your crop--it gives you a more up close and personal feel. I like both compositions and to be honest, at the moment may like your crop a tad bit better (maybe that's a novelty or maybe it will gain more and more advantage as I look at it more). I think my original composition gives you the feeling a vastness and immense space (which may be desired by some) while your crop gives you the more up close and person, "I feel like I can touch a boat" type feel. I guess when analyzing the reason for this change is that the horizon went from slightly off-center in the lower half, to off-center in the upper half. I believe yours would quite possibly be more pleasing to many other people as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to lend your thoughts--I had not considered your cropping idea but find it very pleasing--thanks!

Tom--One more thing...your idea may look even more attractive on the other, auto white balanced version of this shot. The other version, since it doesn't have the fluorescent white balancing, has more of a colorful sky down near the horizon ("fire on the horizon"). I think that would help compliment and "light up" your composition idea. Thanks again for your help--I do appreciate it!

Tyler I really like this shot in particular, the colours blend very well together and the boat rigging provides some lovely shapes and reflections to break up the otherwise soft curvy clouds. You dont need wide angles for shots like these, the image is filled with great elements as it is and the eye explores every corner. The silvery water texture is another great addition.

My only adjustment would possibly be to crop off the very top of the image so that the clouds fade away into blue rather than into another cloud, I really like the other crop Tom has done as well, his crop really puts a lid on the picture.

Great work and great compostion, were running short on coastal sunsets here in wintery England!

Tyler

Thanks for the very kind comments on my portfolio. It is wonderful to meet someone who has so much in common with me (now, I am by no means an athlete!)

You are very prolific and have an excellent eye! Best of all, you are passionate about what you do, and I can see your photography improve with each new posting. We do have a lot in common, even in our attitudes to photography.

I love your portfolio. Your composition is incredible. You have a way of making the photos come to life, seeing things that the ordinary eye would never see.

Very best wishes and look forward to learning from you.

And by the way, it is GREAT that you are a Christian, and a physician too.

Best wishes

Tyler, I don't know that I like one better than the other, but this one certainly catches the eye more with its brighter colors. They are both very nice, but this one would sell better, for what that is worth.

If pressed, I would have to say that I prefer the more natural one, i.e., the other one.
