Daren H, I was very lucky to have a week over Xmas of completely unbroken sunshine so every dusk and dawn gave similar glorious colours. I actually went back a second evening to get more of the same, but the moon had shifted out of view, something I love about this shot. Burano took on a whole new perspective once the streets were empty and all was still.

Hi David: I am curious to know what technique do you use to capture night/low light shots. Do you meter once and take one shot or you meter separately for bright and not so bright areas and then merge/balance in photoshop. You have some stunning shots in your portfolio BTW. Another thing I like about your portfolio is variety. Wonderful and inspiring work. Keep it up. Cheers. Subho

Subho, I just use evaluative metering and always go by the histogram. A shot like this doesnt have a huge dynamic range, the EOS 5D is quite capable of capturing all the detail (except for the bright street lights of course). What is essential is the timing, the sky cant bee too dark or too light, the balance of the shot and therefore the mood will be wrong. For photos with extreme dymanic range it is essential that I merge / balance two shots, I despise using NDgrads in photography, why bother with filters at all really when you can do it with a computer?

I am glad you have had the chance to visit my portfolio and thanks for the comments, it is what keeps me going!

Simply amazing shot David - everything is superb here.

I can't stop looking at it :)

Just a quick question - is it a HDR image or you managed to pull it all out from one (mentioned) single exposure ? I guess it must have been some kind of HDR/DRI as the Moon with 10secs of exposure would have been totally overexposed.

PS. What kind of a RAW processing software do you use ?

Gorgeous picture. I love the color and the lighting. The only thing I could say that I find i don't like it the moon. the moon in the center of the sky draws my eye away from the scene. I found my eye traveling up the canal then the moon came into my peripheral vision and my eye jumped to it skipping the rest of the picture. other then that its a fantastic picture. I love it.

Although I've been lurking here for a while you have the honour of my first PN critique! I couldn't drag myself away from this for ages. The colours and the lights are almost surreal, I can't believe you did so little manipulation to achieve it! Utterly awesome, I don't think there is anything about this that I would change.
