mary fran 0 Posted January 18, 2007 A little ice sculpture found after the ice storm, looked like a bird at first glance...Comments appreciated...thanks Link to comment

williammccarey 0 Posted January 18, 2007 I was doing my usual slog through the "Rate Photos" forum and just caught a quick glimpse of this as I scrolled though looking for something to severely critique... Feather detail seems to be lacking, or not present. Bird appears to be heavily glossy from too much photoshop manipulation, your gray birch branch appears to have rusted, and your bokeh (luv that word!) is so strong it can be seen through the bird. And I can see the reflection of the photographer by the right wingpit. Other than that, what can I say? OK, seriously, this is a neat shot! I actually thought it was a bird at first glance. Ephemeral art at its best. Good eye up there in Winter Wonderland. 6/6 anon. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 18, 2007 Thank you Vitek and Angel. William, I'm glad someone else also thought it looked like a bird, or maybe we bird people only see birds? Beautiful ice everywhere after the storm, thick on everything but so difficult to capture the crystal like light effect that the eye sees. This was one shot of a very few that really looked to me the way your eye sees it. Link to comment
thadley 15 Posted January 18, 2007 Super shot. I like it. Not crazy about the bokeh (did not know that term before my PN days) highlights on the upper right but will still rate this one for 6/6. The sun peeping through between the ice and the branch is appealing. Congrats. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted January 18, 2007 I almost passed it by because I thought somebody had just placed a little glass sculpture in a branch - whoopee! This is amazing! Great eye Mary Fran!! And thank goodness it was a great photographer that passed by it! You really did it justice with this image!! Link to comment

mary fran 0 Posted January 19, 2007 Thanks Tony, Jan and Rafik. Tony, I couldn't decide on the upper right, ultimately left it as catching light was so difficult I decided I wasn't going to "give up" any of it :) I understand bokeh thanks to my husband, I'm surprised I don't see it referred to as bokeh more frequently on the site though. Dieter Schaefer 20,302 Posted January 19, 2007 WOW again! So that's what happens if you keep applying the USM and the noise filter: a transparent bird! Great eye, Mary Fran, and perfectly captured. I think the highlights add interest (I'm not to impressed by the bokeh of that 100-400 lens though); wouldn't change a thing (aside from adding a frame and hanging it). Regards, Dieter (7/7 anon) Link to comment
snapshooter 0 Posted January 19, 2007 It's spectacular, Mary Fran. What an artistic eye, you have. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 19, 2007 Thank you all and all who took the time to look at this and rate it. To think I hesitated to post it and it did better than all of my real birds :)))) Link to comment
samcisa 0 Posted January 21, 2007 This is crazy. I can't believe I didn't see it before. I am bird person so I know, it is definitely a bird. Probably some new kind came with the global warming. Link to comment
whenkat 0 Posted January 21, 2007 What is all the commotion about?...'ice bird'?...it looks more like a sea lion with an unusually wide face, flippers down, and resting on a sharp metal object that is curved. There you go, MFL...one image, different interpretations...that is the hallmark of a good photograph. Well seen. Best regards. Link to comment
cherlyn 1 Posted January 21, 2007 You have a keen & sharp observation. Indeed a cool ice bird sculpture. Most lovely. Link to comment
mary fran 0 Posted January 21, 2007 Than you Razaq, WhenKat, Samir and Cherlyn. WhenKat, I also did see a seal or dolphin, but have been so occupied with photographing birds of late that's where I settled. :) Maybe a resting Hummingbird. Link to comment
