I see what you mean about the position. If he had just turned his head a bit more, but this is still an excellent shot. The bird seems to radiate light that illuminates a very dark background, and it has excellent detail.

Very nice image. I like your use of lighting effects, but would like to see the spotlight just a bit larger...the dark is starting to close in on this little guy. Otherwise, the effect works well to highlight his beautiful coloration.

We all see things differently I guess - I wasn't even looking at his head - I was amazed by the detail on his back and how beautiful and sharp it was! His back is so striking! Oh I do like the rest of him too!

I like the detail on the bird back and tail as well as the light so much that the head not being in perfect focus doesn't actually matter. Regards, Dieter (5.5/5.5 anon)

Thanks all, Leslie I did some dodge/burn to get this and have several versions and can reverse some of the dark area :) Really wanted to highlight this birds patterns and colors, even in its winter plumage.

I recently told Tommy I wanted a shot with the head turned and the back feathers showing, I got this pose, he got the one with the head a bit more turned as if the bird were looking at you. Next time :0)

Mary, that capture is just wonderfull. Position open to the right, over the bird is looking, colors and details. Bravo, keep shooting and giving us the chance to see amazing shots.DL. :O)
