Dennis Newman 0 Posted January 16, 2007 I haven't done much portrait or street portrait work. So take this for what it's worth. I'd suggest less depth of field for a softer background. The light seems harsh. His pants are over exposed, pulling attention away from his face and hands. I like his pose and the look of concentration on his face. Link to comment
awaraagard 0 Posted January 16, 2007 this is lovely! highlights a bit harsh but still very effective pose & activity. regards! Link to comment
johnz 0 Posted January 16, 2007 Dennis & Umair - thank you for your notes and comments. Dennis:: I have to agree about the pants - unfortunately he was wearing white pants and it was a very bright sunny day. I'm not sure how to adjust for this type of situation. Also agree on the depth of field, a muted background would help. Thanks again, every suggestion helps. Link to comment
ljk 0 Posted January 16, 2007 What I try to do in situations like this is to expose for the lightest part, and later in photoshop, bring up the darks. Unfortunately you can't do it the other way around.. Great capture on the pose and feeling...I like the wavy shadow from the clarinet...like the jazzy music he's playing... PS email a request to Howard Dion...he's a wiz at these kinds of shots. Link to comment

Dennis Newman 0 Posted January 19, 2007 I've used graduated ND filters, hand held, with pretty good results. In this situation I think you'd want to use a soft edged filter. It would require some extra set up, but might be worth trying if you've got the time Link to comment
