rhagan 0 Posted April 12, 2002 Im new to action photography so Im interested in any comments or critiques. Ive got more to upload to this series once I get a chance. Rugby seems like such a great subject because there is no equipment to get in the way of the emotion. Link to comment
tonyb 0 Posted April 12, 2002 Assuming it's the Easter Ruggerfest. Brings back memories. I used to play with the St. Louis Bombers. btw...I like the photo. Everyone is focused on the ball coming out of the scrum. It draws the eye back out of the frame and makes you wonder about the developing play. Link to comment
rhagan 0 Posted April 12, 2002 I can only assume it was the tournament you mentioned. This was actually the first Rugby game I've ever watched. This game was the St. Louis Bombers vs. the Omaha Goats. The Bombers won by a landslide.. or so I'm told. Link to comment
richard_h._weiner 0 Posted April 12, 2002 Photographically: Your placement of the huddle to left of center and with those other players looking right is good. Focus and exposure is also bang on. The only failure is that vertically it needs work. Too much foreground, cutting off of heads. Being an action shot sometimes you don't notice this until after releasing the shutter...or when the film is developed. Good effort!! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted April 13, 2002 i find the composition lacking: cropped heads and centered on the player bent over with his rear to the camera.. the exposure, contrast and tones however are just right. Link to comment
stephenh 0 Posted April 14, 2002 Very effective action shot, and all the more dramatic for being in slightly toned B&W. Nice job, but I thought this particular formation was called a "scrum"? Link to comment
rhagan 0 Posted April 14, 2002 "Huddle" was the best description I could come up with... guess I should have asked someone with more Rugby knowledge. I agree with the comments about the vertical composition. Link to comment
andrea_gingerich 0 Posted April 15, 2002 This image is very large. I would suggest uploading a smaller image that can more easily be viewed on a full screen Link to comment
scott_cary 0 Posted April 16, 2002 This is great for a 1st effort! You have some good images here. Focusing and composing and following the action is a challenge shooting this type of action. Fortunately, the camera will take care of figuring out the exposure for you most of the time. Learning the game really helps so you know more what to expect. Keep shooting. These are good. mmurphy 0 Posted May 20, 2002 That's no huddle goddamit! That's a scrum! Ruggers don't like football comparisons. It is a nice shot though. Link to comment
john_karsten 0 Posted May 23, 2002 nice shot.. I'd rate it at least an 8 all around, possibly a 9. I would hoever look over the rules of rugby if you are interested in shooting it more, though you've done a very good job first time out.. as mentioned before, this is a scrum, and no, ruggers dunn like football comparisons. oooh.. painful... hope they don't actually scrum with their hindparts in the air like that ;-) Link to comment
