Rather good example for the thumbrule:"Keep the sun mostly at your back."

When you can see the shadows this distinctly it means it is a high contrast situ and most often too much for the camera dynamics range. The hilites burn thru and yet the darkest parts have no detail. The solution is to go to the other side of the track - keep the sun behind or side-behind. Another solution is to use fill flash but then you need to be close enough and the ambient light must not be too strong for the flash. Also, always consider the driver's eyes when using flash. Third trick is to wait for the small cloud to hide the sun.

When I go to a new-to-me track or special stage I always get the map in advance, get the sun directions from The USNO and so I get an idea where to be at what time. Remember that photography is all about light and its reflections. A shadow is just a place where the light level is low. A photograph is actually a document of reflected light.
