Had To crop the original quite a lot as I forgot to take my 70-300 .. I wasn't expecting to find these owls on display

Hi Peter

i like this shot and hope to get some like it myself as a friend of mine has 4 Barn owls. I intend to visit him and spend some time just shooting the owls and picking the best out for print. For me I think maybe the crop is a little close but then I am a beginer like yourself and sure that someone will give you a better idea. Keep going and will be looking out for more of your work.

I like it, but it looks as if you have heavily cropped it and lost some detail in the feathers, I would like to see the original.A little less cropping and you may see more detail.

These are such beautiful birds! I've been lucky enough to be in a dense patch of habitat along the Lower Colorado River in Arizona at dawn and was able to see one flush from his perch after prey. I agree with previous comments about the tight crop, but still you've achieved a wonderful shot! Cheers! Chris

I agree with Brite (above). Either it was a bit soft, the focus just missed the owl, or it was a small crop of a larger image. The bands on its legs are not to tie the owl down - it's not tied at all - those are bands that identify the bird for scientists. If it's possible, bring the eye into as sharp a focus as you can.. the rest will follow... (that's my amateurish advice!)

Thank you for your comments Yes you are right, I had to crop this from a much larger picture .. I could not get closer to the display on this day.. Also I only had my 18-25 lens full zoom and i would guess this crop is about 1/9th of the whole picture which also had a bright yellow and green van in the background.... I agree birds should be free.. The bird was not Tied up those are the ID tags and handling straps used by falconers to carry it .. The birds on display were from an Owl rescue centre/sanctuary who were collecting some donations to help fund the wonderful work they do to help Owls.. If it weren't for these folk the beautiful birds seen here would be dead.

A bird captured in the wild has a special charm. With the owl's feet tied up, that charm is gone. Unless the intent was to convey the idea of "freedom lost". But the photo does not convey that message either. Some of your other photos are more effective.

Aside: And what is wrong with the person that has tied up this poor bird!
