I'm torn as to whether to crop or clone out the branches on the lower

right. I tried that and somehow felt the result lacked balance. The

branches provide just a touch of colour, plus maybe balance the strong

upper left corner. I'd be interested to hear other opinions on this.

Thanks for looking.

Doug, remove the branches. You could crop it but cloning would be better; a little more work, and not a purist approach, but so what. All the balance you need is being provided by the masses of tonal value that are already present. Don't be torn, be bold....clone!

By the way, I do not give out too many double sevens these days. Regards.

Doug,

well, I wouldn't clone them out. At first sight, it seems indeed the right thing to do, and I'm sure that there are plenty of reasons why one could consider it (for instance, it looks a bit messy).

On the other hand, they provide some depth to the overall shot, and balance the shadow of the trees on the left side.

Cropping them out, would leave an overall imbalanced shot, creating a leading white line which conducts my eyes out of the shot.

I don't know whether it makes sense what I tell you now.

Doug, I think they should be left alone. They are the only defined element in the image and create balance to the dark, heavy trunks in the opposing corner. They also keep the viewer's eye within the image. I think without them the light area of water may just flow right off the edge. I really like this image with its wide tonal range. The rings on the water really make the picture.

The photo needs the branches. I think this is actually my favorite of your portfolio, well exposed ... that right corner is a little distracting but it needs the depth.

Cheers!
