Humpback whale's airborne.

DB_Gallery

A young Humpback whale see's the water turn to blue sky as it takes to the air in Hervey Bay, Australia. Nikon F-5, 400mm 2.8 manual focus hand held. 1/4000 of a second with Provia 100F. This was tougher shooting than one would imagine. The boat motor would cause too much vibration not to mention the off kilter horizon when using a mono-pod. I held that puppy for up to 3 hours in a sinlge stretch........Oooof!

Congrats on a great reward of your skill (manual focus -!! was it far enough away that you could prfocus @ infinity?), and dedication )3 hrs at a time).

........close enough that this is nearly full frame.

If you are lucky, they get into a pattern and you can dial in a hulluva lot closer to where they might come up next.

I would rather have seen the other side of the humpback but this is super and superbly timed, composed, and exposed.

I know how difficult it is to get a shot like this having been to Hawaii in the winter to see these beauties for myself. This is an outstanding photo! I commend you on your patience and timing, Daniel!

Amazing! I really envy you. The closest I got was 50 meters away from a spermwhales tail. This is truely nature at its best. Great shot

Terrific shot. How can we get the elves' attention!! This needs to be seen. Now, I really am inspired to do my ocean series. I followed Scott's comments here. Thanks Scott!

I understand those whales will spit on you too! Your camera must have been in dire straits.

Shutter speed, sharpness and color is real excellent. Many photos like this one, but few with so much details. Congratulations
