jampa 0 Posted April 5, 2002 I love this pic and I would like to hear some comments about it. Link to comment
patrick_michel_dagenais 0 Posted April 5, 2002 Yup, who cares about rules (though I don't see which one it goes against). Simply beautiful. Link to comment
jeff_vogan1 0 Posted April 5, 2002 I like this shot! The eyes are drawn to the lady in woman. It makes me wonder what she is looking at. I have a shot that is also primarily black, but a tight shot of a face. Similar idea. I really like your shot! I hope this link works... http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=571605 Link to comment
rick vincent 1 Posted April 5, 2002 The black just keeps going and going and going.................... Link to comment
jo_thorpe_buckmaster 0 Posted April 5, 2002 I love the "black space" the image is very intimate. Link to comment
ken_imduaikiat2 0 Posted April 7, 2002 I feel opposite to most people about the black space. It's a bit too much of a space. The exposed area itself was nothing less than perfect. Well that's depend on the application; if you use this one commercially it's great cause you can put in text on the empty space. As a photograph, I prefer 5-10% off from the right side. Good luck. mottershead 0 Posted April 9, 2002 Interesting and appealing photograph. However all of the black space on the right is gimmicky, and was clearly done with Photoshop. The problem with this technique, which has been debated before on photo.net (for example, on Peter Christoph's POW) is that the amount of black space added is completely arbitrary. Why just precisely that amount -- why not an inch more or two inches less. The photograph would be better if the original 5:7 format were maintained, with some detail left in the black areas. peter_jones5 0 Posted April 16, 2002 There's a very simple reason why "this amount" of black space may have been chosen, and it's not particularly arbitrary: the artist chose this amount of white space because it is the right amount.Of course, that's not to say it is the reason, but it's a particularly good reason. The image is excellent, why must people complain about the production technique involved? At least it could pass for a photograph if one didn't have special tools with which to view it; the use of computerized tools isn't offensively obvious. If it were printed on glossy paper, would you be able to tell that the black is synthetic? I think not. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted June 19, 2002 I think much of the commentary on the generous use of black space is irrelevant. It was the photographer's choice for this picture for whatever reason. For most of us, leaving it as it is would be as effective as taking half of it away (although adding too much more would be inadvisable and wholly unnecessary.) But, suppose we were told that the woman was in a large room where the sunlight penetrated only as much as shown? Then the blackness would take on an all together different meaning entirely. The submission has not been presented to us as a commercial or graphic artifact, but as one of the photographers favorite images. Whether we are in favor or opposed to the use of black might be better as a secondary consideration to our appreciation of the photographers aesthetic senses. I think it is good to study the image as it is and try to allow his use of composition to stretch our own image making muscles. His postings show a varied approach to image making, of which this is just one technique. A photographers signature style may or may not include images such as this, but perhaps we would all be better off to make one or two anyway as a means of stepping out of our boxes. In my opinion, whether the effect was rendered with software, or results from pure photography is a worthless argument. What matters is how the photographer chooses to present his work.
