twmeyer 0 Posted March 31, 2002 This is a difficult photograph to comment on... it requires that I make many suppositions. I see a woman painting a character that I assume would translate to English as "purify", she appears to be working at night and I can see no clothing on her. The top of her head is cropped, yet there is plenty of room at the bottom. Since I'm told it is a self portrait, I'll assume that may have caused the cropping, and because you used a twin lens reflex, it may have also contributed to that cropping (parallex). The light is hard and direct, reminding me of the light generated by a lantern, which goes with the appearance of night. There doesn't seem to be anything that visually implies purification, since I'm not familar with Sanskrit, so the photograph and caption have little for me to respond to, other than my own guess work. That's not really enough for me to say this is a successful photograph. I have commented this much, because you have gone to the effort to use a 6x6cm TLR to make a fairly revealing self portrait with a serious and intriguing title. All these factors make me assume that you must have an interest in self expression through photography that goes beyond what this image finally contains. I love the hand written caption and the psychologically charged elements of this image, but there is so much left for me to guess at, I would need to see more images before I could make a critical contribution of value... t Link to comment
