jessica_smith9 0 Posted December 1, 2006 I like the grain treatment. Do you shoot film or digital? The softening helps to add a sense of romance to the scene. I don't feel lonely or sad when looking into it, I feel contemplative. Link to comment
dave holmes 0 Posted December 1, 2006 Carissa, Here's my workflow: shoot film, scan, postprocess (usually minor) using Picture Window Pro 4.0. I use several different black and white films depending on conditions and the look and grain I want, this was Neopan 400. (digital 'grain' doesn't do it for me.) The scene was shot at twilight and was dim with little contrast, using a 50+ year old Leica f1.5 lens, wide open. That accounts for much of the misty look. I post processed in some contrast (using a brightness curve) to bring out the path. This seems to have introduced or enhanced some of the soft textures, which I liked. The post-proc work took me no more than 3 minutes. Thanks for looking! I didn't fell sad when I took the shot either. Romance is an important thing to me, glad I could convey it. Dave Link to comment
j.k._york 0 Posted December 1, 2006 great shot with great vintage camera. good control of tonal range and perfect composition for subject bench. loneliness is conveyed well here. well done. regards, J.K. Link to comment
jessica_smith9 0 Posted December 1, 2006 Yeah, I didn't think it was digital. Thesedays, the digital techniques to acheive holga-like photos, or soft grainy photos like this, look artifical to me. I wanted to assume you used film, but didn't want to offend you if you didn't. Link to comment
dave holmes 0 Posted December 1, 2006 Thanks JK, glad you like the vintage look, I'm reluctant to give up my old equipment so long as I can squeeze another good photo from it. Carissa, I don't think I'd be offended either way, but I do like the results that I've been getting from a combination of digital and film. I try to include strengths from each camp. alight 0 Posted December 12, 2006 Simple photo, yet it's very nice. I like photos of this kind. Nice tones, and the grain gives it a nice look. Framing is great, too. This photo calls for a kinda vintage look you have achieved here. Cheers, Micheal Link to comment
j.k._york 0 Posted December 15, 2006 sorry I called your Bessa vintage. I had no idea Voigtlander made new equipment. I have an old field view voigt and thought they were long gone. googled the bessa and was suprised to say the least. now i want one. J.K. Link to comment
dave holmes 0 Posted December 15, 2006 No offense was taken my friend...I use plenty of vintage gear, which the Bessa isn't! i've got an old Voigtlander 'barn-door' vitessa but I rarely use it, too nice a camera. The Bessa is a great camera and I recommend it, worth the money especially if you have some LTM lenses. Easy to use. Wish I they made a digital back for it. Dave Link to comment
