I shoot a lot of herring gulls too - this is a very nice image. The light through its wing is beautiful its just not the perfect angle. Might also have been good to have a bit of space beneath it since its looking down.

Nice capture. I agree with Martin's statement regarding the space below the bird. Visually, it might help to crop the top a bit. Getting this shot with a 17-50 lens means that the bird must have been almost on top of you.
