harnstrom1 0 Posted November 26, 2006 Soft and distinct tones in skin and I wonder how you manage att 800 ISO.I could never guess that you used f:1.4 and got this "perfect" focus and DOF.Perhaps you will let us know about the light conditions. Very charming portrait and something draws Araman's attraction, it's in the eyes. Kind regards J O Link to comment
cyrus khamak 0 Posted November 26, 2006 It is always a privilege to have your informed input on my work. Your technical knowledge and understanding of your tools makes easy to discus issues and learn. Your keen observations here has brought me to realize that I did in fact make a mistake in my typing the aperture used. The real aperture as I have known and checked again is indeed 2.4, great observation. There was not much set up for this shot and and a few more taken that night as the child is very active and constantly moving about. For this particular shot I was laying on the floor. The light on the face comes from a table lamp and the light in the back, from a dining room chandelier. To get a cleaner file at ISO 800, I over exposed to up to a stop and turn it down in conversion and it works well for shadow detail and possible noise. Great input from you. Kind regards. rafikrkamel 1 Posted November 26, 2006 hi cyrus, u know i am not that knowlwgable in photography to comment on technicalities:), but what really gets me to like this image is the light captured in the child's eye, it gives them a very lively look, and the eye colors are superb with that lighting used. good technique with the window as main and the dinning table providing added light from the back. welldone, i have a naive question, do u try the lighting with many shots for the same subject or u get it just right from the first time?welldone, RK! cyrus khamak 0 Posted November 26, 2006 I urge you not to be so modest as you know a lot and you have taken it for granted. With a 15 months old who is very active and constantly moves around, you will bound to have a few shots that are not so perfect. In situations like this when you are shooting at low aperture and ambient lighting, you may also have a shot or two that are not focused the way you'd like them to be. To answer your question more precisely, I took about 12 shots and I got 5 shots that I'm happy with. I may post a couple more soon. Thank you for the visit and I agree, I like this shot for the same reason as you do. Best regards. Link to comment
mohsens 0 Posted December 8, 2006 This is very beautiful. As friends mentioned, the light is very good. Iso 800 with a small lamp, great. and IMHO about the composition, I think it would be better having her more on left. I mean having lesser from the left area and adding more space on right. mmmee 0 Posted December 8, 2006 So, you were lying down on the job? :) That light is just perfect. Each hair is highlighted perfectly, not to mention the light in her eyes. I love the expression and the candid capture. This will be a treasure for her when she is older. I think you need the space on the right. I could stand even more space on the right if I could have the top of her head in the photo. Link to comment

cyrus khamak 0 Posted December 8, 2006 There are a few reasons why I posted the above crop. First and foremost, I'd like to break the "rules" here and there, specially when they do not necessarily improve the image the way it is intended to be viewed. I guess you are referring to the suggestion that"leave some space in the direction to which the model is looking". That is fine but the intention here was to have the emphasis on the eyes and for the same reason I did not frame the head above the forehead, as it would have been unnecessary information. Second reason is the fact that this photo was cropped this way for an 8x10 Print and I decided to post it here in the same format mainly to be able to provide a larger photo for viewing(I'm no longer posting large photos to provide an option of 'view larger'. Therefore a 680 pixel resolution of a wider photo would have been a smaller photo). Third, if you look at the original crop which would have been used for a 12X18 print, there is not a great improvement for the intended purpose of emphasizing on the eyes, to my opinion, or is there? The photo would have been technically more sound on the surface, but I really do not care about that at times like this. I am uploading the photo below which is the full frame and in it's original crop. Please let me know if that works better for you.By the way, he's a boy!Cheers. Link to comment
harnstrom1 0 Posted December 9, 2006 IMO the both versions are equal in this small size. If big size, the original feels more balanced. Perhaps the framing is a little bit "to much", the original version is more straight and pure. // JO Link to comment

dave_dube 10 Posted December 10, 2006 cyrus, original crop and original version still look like ISO 50 (100), I'm not going out to by a Fuji if your going that way. Can you explain some direction for your outstanding ability at this ISO.Warm Greetings, Dave Link to comment
cyrus khamak 0 Posted December 10, 2006 I thank you for the feed back. Since you are talking about the framing, I suppose by "the original" you mean the one all the way on the top!! I never claimed to be a "framer", so you may be right about the frame not best fitting the photo. Kind regards. Link to comment

cyrus khamak 0 Posted December 12, 2006 I feel privileged that you and all other friends here are participating. Thank you for the time you spent to re crop this.in deed I did try that crop. In fact, it was the first try. Neither the parents nor I liked the crop. The parents said, "oh, I like to keep the hair, specially the where it curls up in the back". I did not care for the crop for the following reasons:I too wanted to keep the hair. besides, something about the original post that gives Arman a total presence. I like the position of the shoulder and I like to keep that too. To me it's one of the essential part of the pose and the composure and it defines the angle of shot better which I think is a good thing. Also, to me, the original post, the way it's composed, DOES not distract from the eyes which is my main point of focus and that what's matter most. Rules are fine but you DO have to break them to your advantage when you think it helps you express yourself better and we do have to do things the way WE want them to be done sometimes and NOT what is expected. It's like when you take a driver's licence test. If you don't hold the steering wheels in a certain position, you'll fail the test but after you have passed the test, you drive the way that seems safest and most comfortable for you. Also, what I don't care much about your frame is the bright highlight which I think distract from the eyes.Thank you again and posted these two images along side of one another for better viewingI'll appreciate anyone else's input as well.Best wishes.
