This is haystack rock at Cape Kiwanda in Oregon. It has been

photographed thousands of times by thousands of people. I was trying

to catch a couple sea gulls flying to or from the rock to add some

interest and make this image a little unique.

After nearly 2 hours of waiting, this flock of gulls took off and flew

to the rock. As I was shooting, the camera apparently saw one of the

birds and focused on it so the rock is a little soft focus.

Since the rock was a little soft I decided to go with the "old" photo

look and used PS Elements to desaturate and colorize. Since it was

back lit I also overexposed by 2/3 EV and needed to burn in the clouds

to compensate.

Let me know how you think it turned out.

Thanks!

I like this a lot, although I'd probably prefer a straight B&W as opposed to the sepia toned version you've got here.

The soft focus on the rock is OK actually; I wonder whether stopping down a couple more would have kept the entire thing sharp?

The gulls look very cool against the rock.

Thanks for the comments, Scott. Its ironic that I was using ISO 125 to get maximum sharpness and detail but that caused me to have a narrower DOF so I lost the sharpness I wanted. I have other shots where the rock is very sharp but the birds are a little soft. I'll post one in my single photos folder.

Here is the image in just B&W.

Nice touch to the ROCK. The gulls make this very appealing. Thanks for the comments on Arenal, and the work you did. A similar, but better? is in my CR folder.

The Oregon Coast is one of my favorite subjects. A few of my own are in folders

Great Shot! It was worth the wait. The seagulls make the shot outstanding. I like the sepia tone. I have been experimenting with my digital camera and like the results.
