In a scene like this, depth of field should be used to isolate the dogs from the clutter in the background. You can do this by using a zoom lens up close and at your lowest numerical setting, such as 2.8. Hope this helps.

I might suggest a little more tonal range to get all the way to a true black. Interesting composition.
