kharper1 82 Posted November 5, 2006 Dave, really like the contrasty image and back lighting. Composition wise I'm not sure about the double heads lower left. Still a lovely shot. Thanks for sharing. Keith Link to comment
dave_dube 10 Posted November 6, 2006 Gian and Mark, thank you so much for taking the time to comment.Keith, I did attempt to cloan out the lower left thistle head but too time consuming for this presentation. If the photo continues to get good ratings, I will spend the time adjusting. I totally agree with what your seeing. I think it's a great photo as is but would be up a notch or two without the near left head. Regards, Dave Link to comment

susan stone 0 Posted November 6, 2006 The perfect use of backlight and DOF combined with an interesting composition and this one is a winner! A fragile beauty well armed with barbs and crowns, nature's handiwork. Nice image Dave. Link to comment
dave_dube 10 Posted November 6, 2006 Fast PrimesWell, not quite a tripod. My wife and I were out for a little hike and she was using her hiking poles so it was a bipod.Cherlyn and Florin and Susan Thank you for taking the time to comment. This image almost didn't make it to PN. I've tried posting what I considered a maybe, like this one and they all received thumbs down. This one is getting thumbs up and I don't know why. The others, to me, looked just as good. Thanks again, Dave Link to comment

kslonaker 0 Posted November 7, 2006 Looks almost abstract. Very nice contrast and lighting, Dave. I've had some shots I can't figure out why they do (or don't do) well on PN, too! Link to comment
erwin1 0 Posted November 7, 2006 this shot appeals to me by its almost abstract character. It has lots of mood to it, even if the lower left is not really optimal (but never mind that) this makes photography so much fun and enjoyable ! excellent work Dave ! erwin Link to comment
panayotis_papadopoulos 0 Posted November 7, 2006 A very unique and artistic shot!...well executed Dave! Link to comment
dave_dube 10 Posted November 7, 2006 Thanks everyone! Just when the Pacific Northwest weather was taking it's toll on my mood, your making my days seem brighter.Kim and Susan I just realized one thing that is totally different with this photo from all of my other posts. I saved this one for the Web as a gif file. My others, some are sRGB and others are in the original RGB color space. This one has held more to my file although still not quite as much golden glow on the thistle, almost/not quite.Regards to all, Dave Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted November 7, 2006 I noticed a difference when I started converting to sRGB before posting. Up until then, my posted images were duller than the originals or the bright colors wouldn't hold up. It was very frustrating! Now what I post is very close to the original. I wonder what saving as a gif does?? Link to comment
lalit 0 Posted November 8, 2006 Photo.net ratings are not always appropriate. There is not doubt in my mid to give high ranking for this one though! Link to comment
dave_dube 10 Posted November 9, 2006 Kim, I too saw that difference and really attempt to convert the file for posting to sRGB. The GIF issue is worth checking out, not sure it makes any big difference but does reduce the total number of colors in the file.Latil ~ thank you for your kind words and support. I too feel the same way about the ratings but won't go into it now that I'm getting good ratings.Have a great week, Dave. Link to comment
garydad 0 Posted November 10, 2006 I read a post in PN once where a guy was expressing discouragement at poor ratings. In answer to that post, and in an attempt to encourage, a response was posted something like this, "Photography is a bit like golf; day after day you give it your best but continue to shoot mediocre shots, and just before you get discouraged and quit you hit a hole in one." That hole in one keeps you coming back. This is a lovely photograph; beautiful composition, lighting and balance. It all came together so well. Congratulations on your hole in one! Link to comment
