darius.tulbure 0 Posted November 1, 2006 Fantastic shot! Quite a good idea to shoot it with film. 6 hours exposure time? Great colors! How did you get them? Link to comment
david choo 0 Posted November 1, 2006 Thanks guys! The exposure time was about 8 hours. The red cast occurs naturally from reciprocity of Velvia 50. The scene in general was lit with perhaps 50 to 100 full powered pops of a handheld flash while the line behind the rock was painted with a daylight balanced flashlight... which took anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. PeterKrenek 26 Posted November 2, 2006 David, this is a great shot, technically demanding. I am interested in how you achieved such a diffused lighting of the foreground with the flash. Did you move around between individual flash pops ? Peter Link to comment
shami 0 Posted November 3, 2006 wonderfull creative work at the end. the torch light on the path is also very nicly done.. regards 6/6 Link to comment
david choo 0 Posted November 3, 2006 Yes, I moved throughout the scene with the flashlight as well as the off camera flash. The distance from the rock to the end of the tail is substantial from what I remember. As for the rock moving.. it's a naturally occuring phenomenon at the "Race Tracks" in "Death Valley" Link to comment
chriss1 2 Posted November 3, 2006 very beautiful scene with star trails and fantastic light, the red sky looks excellent Link to comment
PeterKrenek 26 Posted November 3, 2006 Thank you, David, for your explanation. I'd like to know one more detail - did you use Velvia 100F (in tech details you indicate ISO 100) or Velvia 50 (as you write in your comment) ? I ask because I shoot Velvia 100F mostly, so I'd like to know its behavior in this kind of situations. Link to comment
vlad po... 1 Posted November 4, 2006 Excellent. Looks so surreal. Indeed, technically demanding...to walk for 8 hours with flashlight...I wish I would be so patient. But the result was really original. Link to comment
jana 1 Posted November 4, 2006 Incredible result, very surreal. I love the red sky and the light path. My favorite image ! cheers Jana Link to comment

FilmPhotography-DuaneHorne 0 Posted April 3, 2009 David, What an excellent image you have captured. We were in Death Valley in January and stopped at Ubehebe Crater...we were afraid to take the vehicle out to the Racetrack because of warnings from the ranger. Anyway...what you have captured here is what I have longed to do for quite a while. I am a dedicated film shooter jsut because I like film. I had a Mamaya C220 and a roll of Velvia 50. Excellent work. Very well done Link to comment
FilmPhotography-DuaneHorne 0 Posted April 3, 2009 David, What vehicle did you drive to get there? How many were in your party. Thanks Link to comment
