Thunderheads in the evening, Afton MN

greglyon

Tripod mount, ND Grad to equalize the field with the much brighter clouds. Hard edge ND grad was used, the area of transition is from the horizon to the flat bottom of the Thunderheads (the color transition in the white clouds was a natural effect of the sun setting). Manually metered to get best match, bracketed. PhotoShop: Curves and Minor Saturation boost.

The combination of the ND and whatever you did in Photoshop gives the color in this a "manipulated" feel which takes away from the very aesthetic I think you we're trying to go for.

The clouds are certainly nice but they are not enough of a dynamic catalyst to really make the image appealing.

Thanks for all the comments!

Douglas: the Photoshop component was quite mild on this shot. The light was really weird, clouds overhead providing sort of a softbox for the grassy area. I agree that the ND grad always adds a strange effect. I hope to learn the process of joining two images in photoshop to extend dynamic range soon!

Keith and Hugues: I played around with the square format or at least some cropping off the bottom, and may go with that in the final version. This will also become the left part of a 3 pane stitched photo once I find the right software to do it...

I think i LIKE the composition. One's eye is definitely pulled to the trees (& farmhouse?) that's being threatened by the storm. The shaddows work well.My beef is the horrid velvia making the colours too unatural. You can easily get away with that grad filter-it looks real to me-it's a sunset shot.

I share the feeling of Douglas Vincent that the Photoshop took out a certain extent of the nature feeling of your nice photos in this folder.
