i'm on the same page as the above, Lizzie. My first and only thought is of Windows XP. The tree adds a new element to XP photo. are you considering for submitting to Microsoft Corp for use with the next version?

i like the lineal composition and the rich color. i'm not sure of your editing options, but i'd like to see the tree "pop" a little more. that'd help for me.

It's funny, I have XP and the similarity didn't occur to me. I saw this tree from the road on a rainy day last week...saw the clouds and blue sky today, and went out to capture it. It's my first image caught in RAW format and I am still a novice at Photoshop, so I don't have the ability to make the tree "pop". I hate time on the computer although I do realize that I could do some additional things to improve my images...maybe this winter I'll take some time to learn more about Photoshop.

The comments cracked me up...I wasn't thinking Microsoft, I was thinking Teletubbies (thank God my kids are too old for them now!). Interesting shot...it really is very surreal, though. Where is this? Was this a golf course?

No, I found this near Traverse City...an old piece of farmland that has been replaced by grass over time...the tree is one of a few that go up the hillside to the left...I was just able to isolate it. I saw the potential shot from about a half mile away as I drove by the other night. It is the first image I have taken in RAW.

what do you think about shooting in RAW? I've been avoiding it since I'm really not sure that I need it, but I always wonder if it would be smart or not. What were your reasons for switching or was this just experimental? I'd love any insight you might have on this. I've read varying opinions, but I think for the majority of the stuff I shoot it wouldn't be necessary. Now that I'm getting into still life and abstract stuff, though, I may want to print more images and maybe this would be smart. Sigh...what's a girl to do? :P

I made the switch for a couple reasons. First, I was reading a magazine called Whisper in the Woods. It's a quarterly publication here in Michigan full of nature preservation articles and such. I thought, hey, I have some pretty good images, maybe I'll submit a couple. Well, they only accept photos in RAW format. Hmmm.

Then I got to thinking, I am about to enter in our most beautiful season up here, and I may just get lucky with a good shot or two. If I want to print something large, RAW would be better.

Lastly, I am still far from perfect when it comes to having all my camera settings perfect when taking shots. I tend to just take a few of the same shots, trying some different settings on each one. Bottom line, lots of images to look at, sort through, and delete. In RAW, I will take less duplicate images and have good flexibility with making some adjustments on the computer to truly reflect what I saw.

In my mind, I thought RAW might require me to spend more time at the computer. In reality, I think I may spend less. The only issue that this theory compounds...storage. On my laptop for one. Secondly, my camera's memory card now holds just 41 images. Looks like more $ will be spent for additonal memory for both of them.

One thing that was immediately noticeable, since I am curretly shooting in RAW + JPEG, the image in RAW is the image I saw. You can see the compression in the JPG images instantly. They are two different, albeit very similar images. Once I feel 100% comfortable with RAW, I will give up taking the additional jpeg...that will help with the memory card issue on the camera I guess.

Hope this diatribe gives you some insight and I'll keep you posted as to my feelings about my move to RAW.

Definitely gives me something to think about. I'll get back to you on that! :) Thx for sharing your thoughts.

Just wanted to add my two cents worth - when it matters, shot RAW without a doubt. Don't count on being able to duplicate an image by going back a second time. And memory cards are relativly cheap these days. Besides, if one is going to get one of these lovely 6-8 mp cameras, why shoot jpegs? Ok, so maybe that was only worth one cent but there you have it. Oh, great image as well. It is framed the way it should be (no, not talking about the frame around the picture).
