The R1 nuclear reactor was built between 1948-1954 and was the first reactor in Sweden. It was used for research purposes and was decommissioned some 30 years ago. The numbers on the ceiling and walls were added during the radiation sanitation process. The actual reactor core was transported elsewhere for final storage.

Embedded in rock some 30 meters under the Swedish capital of Stockholm, the R1 reactor was top secret while in use, and is still unknown to most people - special permits need to be obtained to gain access.

 

It is an eerie place now, silent and cold.
