This man was the boatman on a trip on the backwaters. I'm trying to

improve my portait photography and would value comments. Thanks

This one jumped right out at me. Nice composition. I also like how you eliminated everything but your subject. Nice and tight.

It also looks sharp ...nice job.

Hi Jamie! The composition and cropping are very good. The only thing I would comment on is that ypur subjects face is totally in the shade-caused, no doubt by the hat he's wearing. You need to use some fill in flash and/or a reflector to get some light in there! A reflector can be as simple as a large piece of white cardboard. Flash is useful even during the day-a lot of people thin you can only use flash inside or in low light conditions. The eyes would also benefit from some catchlights. A catchlight is a spot of light in the eyes caused by flash or by reflection. Eyes tend to look lifeless if a catchlight isn't present. You can photoshop them in-it gives thes eyes a sparkle and can make a major difference to a portrait. Whilst we are on the subject of eyes, with a head and shoulders portrait such as this, focus your lens on the eyes! If you want to see examples of catchlights, you're more than welcome to have a look at my folder on this site! Hope that's been of some use to you Jamie and welcome to the wide world of photography!
