wendyskinner 0 Posted August 23, 2006 this is a cool pic. how do you make all the background black like that? cheers Link to comment
mark.trueman 0 Posted August 23, 2006 the background was already a very dark green colour, the colour of the water. I just adjusted the curves on a loose selection of the water in the green channel to convert to black, and then just tidied it up with a black brush Link to comment

john falkenstine 1 Posted August 24, 2006 Mark, this image type has been submitted to photo.net many, many times. Its basically a flamingo picture with the background dodged out. Please tell us in your own words why you did this? To be like the other flamingo pictures? Link to comment
mark.trueman 0 Posted August 25, 2006 John, i submitted it for the same reason you have submitted all of those america photos in your gallery; because i like the photo and im proud of it. Im pretty new here so i wasnt aware that i had to search the archive for flamingo photos with the background "dodged out" (or "burned in" - you burn the light onto the image to turn it black i believe) before i posted my image. Sincere apologies. Link to comment
john falkenstine 1 Posted August 25, 2006 M: a Good and Polite reply. And you are absolutely correct. If you like this type of image, you post it as I do mine. However in terms of creativity, I certainly would urge you, nudge you, cattle prod you to look "outside the flamingo box" Link to comment
mark.trueman 0 Posted August 26, 2006 John, thanks for your input. Creativity is something im aspring to improve in my photos. Unfortunately, where i live in the UK, there isnt much in the way of quality landscapes or seascapes. Even the urban areas are pretty grim, so it becomes a lot harder to be creative. I envy all of you americans who seem to have glorious landscapes, neon lights and personality filled shots waiting to be taken on your doorstep. Hopefully me next few shots will be more creative. Many thanks Mark Link to comment
stigp 0 Posted August 26, 2006 Even if this picture has been done before, this is a very good execution of this theme. The timing is just right as is the light and exposure of the bird. The composition is just right as well.. I guess you adjusted that in PS too? Congrats and good luck with further photos! Stig:) Link to comment
kensimm 0 Posted August 26, 2006 The unpresidented step of placing two comments on one photograph and I do enjoy the flamingo shot. How important within the overall image is the subject matter? Surely it depends on the type/style of shot. Subject matter might be all important as in repotage or it might take a back seat to technique as perhaps (I say perhaps) in abstract. If a flamingo is worth taking then take it I say. I like your answer also.At the risk of prevaricating this is not why I have replied again. I also live in the UK, in the industrial North in fact. I most definitely do not agree that there is nothing to photograph! I would not have posted most of my shots if that was the case. Creative has nothing to do with where you live. Yes, our friends across the pond do have big skies and vast open spaces, but can I urge you in all modesty to look at my folio, most of which where taken in these scepterd isles. By the way I do not regard myself as a patriot, quite the reverse actually. Hope you will pardon the long winded reply and by the way welcome to PN. Regards Ken (Originally from Wigan). mark.trueman 0 Posted August 26, 2006 Stig, There is a slight crop on the image from the top and bottom just to balance the shot, but other than that, this is a full frame image. Ken, I live in Luton, so the best thing around here is Whipsnade wild animal park. I'l try getting out into the countryside around here when the weather become slightly better!! Many thanks to all for making this an interesting discussion. Mark Link to comment
john falkenstine 1 Posted August 28, 2006 My advice: go to the pub if you're old enough and load up, or if you have to, smoke a doobie for a little mental adjustment. Now go out in your local area, preferably on foot, and just shoot images, shoot ANYTHING WITH THAT CAMERA, Now go back and look at them. You have just made the first photo set of yourself. Never, never again, take a picture of a frigging flamingo. Link to comment
