the baby looks newborn, and the cat looks none too pleased, like that used to be his spot on the bed. i laughed. the scene of the mother and child behind the cat is definitely supplemental to the photo, because of the focus on the cat. i would've chosen the same dof.

Wonderful composition of the scene! This shot easily tells its story. I love it!

My camera (sony dsc-s30) doesn't allow me to work that much with DOF.

I tried a little, for instance in this shot, but is it enough to bring

the message across, or should I blur the background a little in my

photo editor?

I do not think this can be improved...funny the ressemblance of our cats (see the other one sent a bit earier on this forum...)

I have to agree with the person that said that the cat looks upset about the new family member, but the cat will adjust. I too have recently added a child to my family and the cat was originally upset. Here is a picture of how well the cat has adjusted.

I didn't get the same impression from the image it seems most did. This cat strikes me as a protector, not ousted/jealous, and I think given the photo's title that this is what the photographer was going for. The composition is excellent; watchful cat in FG, guarding the newest family member in BG. The DOF works pretty well, although the BG could be a tiny bit softer. It's not worth the trouble, though--it's nearly there. The problem is that the cat's not quite in focus--we have the hair on her ears, but her eyes are a little soft. Otherwise, good work.

The DOF could possibly be shallower, but the photo is really great as it is. I wouldn't mess with trying to blur the background in photoshop.
