Carmel-by-the-Sea, as the town is officially known, still retains its artistic atmosphere even though many of the artists have been forced out to Orgon and other places by the ever-increasing prices of Carmel. At least once per year there is an artists exhibition featuring pictures painted over the last twenty-four hours. This artist couple had had their canvasses signed that morning by the mayor for return by evening.
