Wild Black Bear/No. Wisconsin

kevin_spatt

I've been chasing bears around Northern Wisconsin over the past couple of Julys. It takes a lot of hard work to get them to present in a photographable location, and the biting insects are at their peak. I purposely set up in an area of high vegetation in order to get this standing shot - he's trying to sniff out my exact location. I used Provia 400F for the speed - this summer I'm going to try to lure them to a more 'open' location so I can avoid the shade and use a slower film. Is there a blue cast to this?

In fact I'm not too sure I would have noticed had you not asked.

I like the composition, but there is something that just doesn't seem right. Maybe it's all the light Green surrounding the bear that's distracting.

Don't think the blue cast is a problem...It's there but only slightly. I agree with Mark...The composition is too busy... A little tighter with the long lens...or closer...which ever is safer!!!

It feels as if maybe the light is a bit harsh. Look at the tonal contrast between his back and his chest. I like the crop, myself, and the colors, but I'd almost like to see the guy totally in the shade, then over-exposed a stop or a stop-and-a-half. That would really help bring out the fur and I don't think you'd lose an undue amount of the green, either. Hard to say though--experimentation is always the best.

glad you're still with us, kevin. y'know, the 'friendly' ones are the ones with the bells in their scat... ;-) overall a good picture, considering the risk. there are some interesting compromises here: i would recommend a 400mm lens for such stuff, but then of course the extra weight would make your escape a bit harder ;-)
