Another from my snooker hall set. This one again is with available light only. This is the original cropping I prefer this shot, but have a look at the cropped version and see what you think. Comments please.

This is a cropped version of the full frame print, see my B/W folder.

Have a look at both, any comments on this or both prints would be

appreciated.

I'm assuming you used a Tripod? Although I am wondering your settings? The reason being if it was a longer exposure perhaps you could of retained more of the clothing? I think this is a very nice shot although I wish for it to be either softer or have more contrast. It's a bit inbetween right now, but then again that could also be due to scanning and monitors. Thanks for posting.

I do like this shot; it certainly captures the moment. However, it would be nice to have a bit more detail overall. I agree with the other post - it's somewhat in between right now, but I don't know that I would like a softer look - more contrast would be better I think. None the less, a very commendable picture - thanks for posting it!

This is a beautiful shot! The composition is perfect..the lighting..it's all there. I find myself longing for sharpness though..It's the only flaw IMO. Thanks for sharing!

I have to disagree with all of the previous postings wanting more detail, more contrast, sharper focus etc. Gaining any of these elements would lessen the photo's most compelling attribute -- the mood. This could be a film frame ripped right off "The Hustler" movie reel. If you've ever spent much time in old, smoky pool rooms such as this one, you'll know that David has captured the mood perfectly. I do, however, prefer the other crop (the wider angle). The extra stuff to the right of the main subject in wider crop just adds more to the scene as a whole, I think. And a few scanning imperfections at bottom (pale white lines) should be retouched in PhotoShop.

Mr. Owens, if you shoot pool as well as you shoot

pictures this guy's in big trouble. And, Mr.

Carssow said it better than I could. Nice job.

I disagree with the comment about the top part being distracting. I think the backlighting gives an awesome mood, especialy the the top right corner. I love the way the smoke is lit and clouds around his head. I like the way the balls and player balance each other out. I looked at the other crop and it feels to much like the player and table are falling off the print.

I have to side with the sharper, cleaner camp. When I saw the thumbnail I thought, "What a great shot." But when I saw the full image my reaction was more like, "Oh, darn." The back lighting and the shadows from the balls really make a nice shot. If the detail is on the negative you have a really great photo potential.

I think James and Mike sum up the view and feeling I wished to portray in this shot. It was never meant to be pin sharp, as I feel this would have distracted from the overall feel of this place the smokey soft effect was to express my feelings about the room and people. Sadly this place no longer exists and can never be recapture. It just brings back fond memories for me.
