This shot was originally a color shot.

Please let me know your thought's on the following:

1) Cropping, Composition, White border

2) Pose and Expression

3) Tonality, Sharpness and Detail

4) Any work in this same genre that you find inspiring

It seems like an awful waste of E100SW if you want a b+w - but the tonality is beautiful, the cropping is fine, and the composition also. In my opinion. The hand seems to donimate things a bit - but that need not be a negative. If the model has beautiful hands, as she does. The human hand is the same size as the human face, you know that? You did this for a client?

Hi Phil,

Ha, yeah E100SW is expensive to shoot as b/w! But here in Hong Kong we pay US$14.74 per box of 5 rolls for 120 format - and then $2.50 per roll to develop at the pro lab. Cheaper for both if your turning over enough work to buy in bulk.

I dunno how that stacks up to what it cost's in the states but I think it's cheaper.

I liked the color stuff as well but was reading about how to mess around with LAB mode in PhotoShop to pull out better/different b/w shots from color originals.. and I got this.

About the hand/face/size thing..yeah interesting isn't it. I used to be in Character Development for Disney and before that at Hanna-Barbera so I am intimately familiar with human proportions. I used to crank out everything from Scooby Doo to Winnie the Pooh - but spent every waking second for years doing human figure work.. both quick sketch and long poses - Pencil and chalk work as well as sculpting. All of that is what kept me from photography for so many years. ;-)

As for being for a client. No. Just trying to learn more about lighting. Was when I first got started using studio lighting.

$14.74 for 5 rolls sounds like a good deal. I don't use E100SW, but pay about US$6.00 for Velvia at retail prices (actually I'm converting in my head from Australian prices). Provbia is a bit more expensive, but not much, and comes in 5-roll pro-packs. It would be interesting to compare different prices all over the world - might be cheaper to buy in country A and ship to country B!

I love the composition. Her legs work as leading lines upward. This shot creates drama I think from the way she's posed and from her gaze outward. If I had any nit to pick, is the light just a little harsh? (I realize this could be in part the limits of my monitor) Perhaps it would have worked better with a slightly larger more diffuse light source?

Luc,

I've been anxiously awaiting more uploads from you, and this is no disappointment. Her hands, indeed, are beautiful, and the tones in the skin complement that nice curve of the breast, collarbone, arm and leg.

It might be nice to see her hair up, with just a few tendrils hanging down? I think the curve of the neck would add nicely to the overall image, possibly. But overall, you've done an excellent job with the soft lighting.

Great shot. I like the grays. I always wanted to shoot that way... My pictures are more low key type. It's a great picture. Is true that the hand is calling eye's atention, but is more intresting that way. otherwise it would look boring. She is very beautiful too. Thanks.

Lucas, this is my favorite of you images. You have some nice portraits. I don't do portraits, but I see some good images in this folder. Some of them good-story-telling.
