Excellent, but I'm wondering about the necessity of the face paint.

It is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP in BODYPAINTING! I have no influence on the styling of the modells! It is always the artists joice.

I think this picture is fine relative to the photographic elements but I had to mark it down because I just don't get what it means...what's the theme, or story, or message???

If your intent was to show a framed picture "coming to life" or whatever, I think it was done all wrong. Showing the background (water)the same inside and outside the frame and showing arms/hands reaching around from the inside to the outside leaves me with nothing more than an image of a girl holding a picture frame. What's that supposed to mean?

If on the other hand you are trying to show the subject coming out of a framed picture then the hands need to reach 'through' the framed opening and the background outside of the frame needs to be a different view...usually a solid black background. Does that make sense...can you follow my explanation? It's hard to put into words.

Or am I so far afield in my thinking that I've missed the whole point and need to re-think my rating?

thank`s - from this point of view you are rigth. the name is truly not well choosen. The photo was taken on an event called the World Championship in Bodypainting. There you do not have any influence on the styling and the equipment of the modells. You can "adjust" the posing a little - but the rest is: all you can do is take some pictures while arround 40 painted models are running arround between arround 10 locations on a 10.000square meters area. About 250 photographers are hunting for them.

For the title: It is not well choosen. I also wouldn't have painted her face green... but that's the artists style...

I understand now. And I have revised my ratings upwards. I think that is appropriate for me to do. Technically, it's really a very good photo.

I would like to shed some light on the subject matter, not the technical aspects of the image, as I am sure there are more qualified members to do that.

 

The body painting is a take on quite a famous painting called "The son of man".

 

The son of man is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte. Magritte painted it as a self-portrait.

 

The original painting consists of a man in a suit and a bowler hat standing in front of a small wall, beyond which is the sea and a cloudy sky. The man's face is largely obscured by a green apple.

 

Magritte said about the painting , "Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden..."

 

The Son of Man is privately owned. Some may recall that the painting was used in the 1999 film "The Thomas Crown Affair".
