I think it's an attractive photo. Lighting was soft and dramatic... The tree candles added nice touch to the picture-it also frame the model's face quite nicely. Facial expression from your model was beautiful... would have been great if she was happy. At the first glance, I registered right away of the overall feeling of the picture--there's nothing in the frame that directly express her "homesickness". I read the title and have to look further in the info section to find out that the picture was taken in Germany. Hmm...would it be better if the background or the prop give a better sense of location?.. I think, in order to tell a story, the audience shouldn't have to research further than what's showned in the photograph... every thing should be presented within the frame in a simple manner. But I still think it's a good photo... just doesn't tell much of a story.

Yang, this is exceptionally nice, I am getting the homesick message and possibly because I am assuming that the very pretty (Relative/Wife ?) subject in dress traditional to your homeland. The expresion on the subjects face does express deep thought, so it works well. I think that the red candles and soft light from candles accentuate the absolutely beautiful traditional dress and perfect light for the face. The dark background is definitely perfect in this situation. Thanks for sharing.

Yang--while the candlelight is very well done, and I know digital in low light is hard, the photo looks very static and staged. It's coming out sentimental rather than getting at something really emotional.

More specific to the homesick point: it's just her and the candles. She could be in Frankfurt, she could be in Hong Kong. We don't know. To drive your point home, she could be in a more obviously Western setting. What is up to you.

My 2¢.

I want so much to learn how to take these 'black velvet' photos. I know nothing of lighting technique - did you use special lighting or just the candlelight?

I'm glad you like this shot, Ruth. About the lighting, I used a 20 watt spot front light on the left and a 100 watt backlight on the

right. However, the subject was mainly lighted by the candles.

Unfortunatelly photo can't speak yet .I sure we would have testy moment of poetry as well as we had very soft and deep shoot.

yang, i think the model is looking too far - of course, china is far from germany, but homesickness is close, is inside the body, near the chest...

excellent portfolio! thanks for wonderful pictures and emotions...
